Texas summers are no joke — and while we humans feel the heat in the air, our pets feel it under their feet. Also, If your pup plops down on hot concrete, they could be at risk for painful burns you might not notice right away. I've seen firsthand what too much sun and sidewalk can do to your dog’s skin, & I want to help you keep them safe.
Here’s what every pet parent should know about hot pavement and paw care during the summer months to protect dog paws:
🌡️ How Hot Is Too Hot?
If it’s 85°F outside, the pavement can reach 135°F in full sun — hot enough to burn skin in seconds.
💡 Quick test: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds.
If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for paws!
🚫 Avoid These Times for Walks
The hottest pavement hours are usually:
10 AM to 6 PM
Especially in direct sunlight, on asphalt or concrete
Try early morning walks or just before sunset. Bonus: less stress for brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, too!
🐾 Signs of Paw Pad Burn:
Limping or licking paws constantly
Red, blistered, or peeling pads
Whining during or after walks
If you notice these, rinse with cool water and contact your vet.
✅ Tips to Keep Paws Safe:
Walk on grass or dirt trails whenever possible
Use paw balm before and after walks for protection and moisture
Try dog booties if your pup tolerates them
Limit walks to early or late in the day
🔥 It’s Not Just the Paws at Risk
Hot pavement doesn’t just burn paw pads — it can also scorch sensitive undercarriages, especially for dogs with lower bellies or short legs. That includes areas like the belly, inner thighs, and yes — delicate parts like vulvas and scrotums.
💡 Tip: Avoid letting your dog sit or lie down on hot asphalt or sidewalks, and keep outdoor potty breaks short during peak heat.
